X-trail Deal Scales The Heights

While Nissan's X-Trail four-wheel-drive has been a firm favourite in the compact 4WD segment for several years, discounts have been confined to about $2000.

However, Blue Mountains Nissan at Faulconbridge is now discounting the flagship X-Trail Ti-L automatic by $6000. Pay $38,990 drive-away.

Upgraded early last year, the five-seat Nissan X-Trail Ti-L is equipped with climate control air-conditioning, anti-lock brakes, dual airbags, leather interior, cruise control, power sunroof, alloy wheels, a six-stacker CD player, front fog lights, a high-mounted rear spoiler and power front seats.

The part-time 4WD system lacks a high and low range transfer case but is nevertheless a sophisticated system with a go-anywhere ability. Four-wheel-drive is available at the twist of a knob on the dashboard.

One of Nissan's success stories in the past few years, the X-Trail lost its Best Compact 4WD title last year and was outsold by a nose by Toyota's RAV4. In the first two months of this year it has been relegated to third place by Subaru's Forester, again by a very small margin.

So far this year, compact four-wheel-drives have shown a 10 per cent increase in sales. Medium 4WDs are up by 49 per cent, large 4WDs down by 6.4 per cent and luxury 4WDs down by 15 per cent.

Blue Mountains Nissan also has a $6000 discount on the larger 3.0-litre turbo diesel Patrol DX. Pay $49,990 drive-away for a manual, $52,990 for an automatic.

On top of air-conditioning, central locking and a driver's airbag the DX Patrol benefits from a free bull bar and driving lights.
